about enough.
Growth costs something.

We tend to talk about transformation from the other side of it.
The awakening.
The breakthrough.
The new beginning.
The beautiful life that opened up when we finally released what wasn’t meant for us anymore.

And all of that can be true.
But there’s usually a part before that.

A part where things are fucking dark.
A part where you know something within you is changing, you’ve finally stopped fighting it, and now you actually have to allow the change to happen.

That’s where I’ve been recently… And I didn’t ask to be here.
I think that’s important.
I didn’t ask for another period of growth.
I didn’t ask for an awakening.
I wasn’t unhappy with my life.

Quite the opposite.
There were things I deeply loved about my life.
There were places where I felt comfortable.
People I loved.
Routines I enjoyed.
Parts of myself I had worked really fucking hard to become.
There were things I thought I had finally figured out.

And then something inside me changed anyway.

In a pervious reflection, I wrote about recognizing that process.
That moment when you finally realize nothing around you necessarily changed… you did.

But recognizing growth and actually allowing yourself to move through it are two very different things.

Because once you stop resisting the change, you have to begin experiencing what the change requires.
And in my experience… growth requires loss.

The Chrysalis Isn’t Pretty
We love the caterpillar and butterfly metaphor.
The caterpillar becomes the butterfly.
Transformation.
Beautiful.
Inspiring.
Put it on a fucking coffee mug. 😂

But we tend to skip over the chrysalis.
The caterpillar doesn’t just crawl inside, grow some wings and come back out looking fabulous.
It DISSOLVES.
The form it knew stops existing before the new form is completely created.
And lately I’ve been thinking about how fucking accurate that actually feels.

There is a period in transformation where you’re no longer entirely who you were…
but you aren’t yet whoever you’re becoming.

And that space can feel incredibly uncomfortable.
Sometimes lonely.
Sometimes confusing.
Sometimes exciting.
Sometimes terrifying.
Sometimes all of those things before lunch.

Because growth doesn’t only ask:
What are you becoming?

Sometimes it asks:
What are you willing to release?
And those aren’t always things you wanted to lose.

Sometimes We Grieve What Was Good
I think we sometimes make grief too dependent on something being bad.
As though releasing something should be easy if growth is calling us somewhere else.

But what if you loved it?
What if that version of your life was beautiful?
What if those experiences mattered?
What if the person you were before this transformation wasn’t broken?
What if you weren’t desperately trying to escape your life?
What if you were actually enjoying the fucking road trip?

That’s where growth has been difficult for me.
I wasn’t running away from something I hated.
I was being called to change while still loving so much of what already existed.

And there is grief in that.
There is grief in recognizing that something doesn’t fit exactly as it once did.
There is grief in releasing expectations you had for your future.
There is grief in letting go of identities you’ve carried for years.
There is grief in realizing that the version of yourself who created certain dreams may not be the version of you who gets to live them.
There is grief in uncertainty.
There is grief in surrender.
There is grief in standing between what you knew and whatever comes next.

Growth has a cost because change has a cost.
Emotionally.
Mentally.
Spiritually.
Sometimes physically.

We don’t simply decide to transform and skip happily into the next chapter.
Sometimes we fucking crawl there.

Sometimes I Need to Romanticize What’s Coming

I’ve noticed something about myself during this particular transition.
When I’m deep in the hardest parts of it, I tend to romanticize what’s waiting on the other side.
The adventure.
The possibilities.
The things I haven’t experienced yet.
The people I haven’t met.
The opportunities I don’t even know exist.
Whatever might be waiting around the next bend.

And I think I understand why.

Sometimes I need to.

Sometimes when I’m sitting in the darkness of transformation, I need to remind myself that there may be something beautiful on the other side of it.
That there can still be adventure.
That there can still be joy.
That there are things I can’t see from where I’m standing yet.
Not because what I’m leaving behind wasn’t beautiful.
Not because I believe whatever comes next will somehow be better.
But because when you’re grieving something you didn’t particularly want to lose, sometimes you need something to help you keep walking.
Sometimes hope is what gets you through the chrysalis.

The Cost Doesn’t Mean It’s Wrong

I think that’s another thing I’m learning.
Something being painful doesn’t automatically mean it’s wrong.

Grief doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve made a mistake.
Missing something doesn’t mean you’re supposed to return to it.
Being scared doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue.
And loving something doesn’t always mean it gets to remain exactly as it was forever.
Sometimes the cost hurts precisely because what is changing mattered.

And perhaps part of surrender is allowing ourselves to acknowledge that without immediately trying to turn the loss into a lesson.

Some things deserve to be grieved.
Some versions of ourselves deserve to be honoured.
Some chapters deserve to be missed.
Some endings deserve tears even when we trust the beginning that’s forming somewhere underneath them.

I don’t think growth asks us to pretend otherwise.
Maybe it simply asks us to keep going.

Somewhere in the Middle

I don’t think I’m completely on the other side of this one yet.
I’m somewhere in the middle.

Some things have become clearer.
Other things are still changing.

There are moments when I’m excited about what’s ahead.
There are moments when I miss what was.

And there are moments when I have absolutely no fucking idea what I’m doing. 😂

Maybe that’s what transformation actually looks like while you’re living it.
Not the perfectly packaged before and after.
The middle.
The surrender.
The grief.
The uncertainty.
The hope.
The occasional glimpse of something beautiful ahead that reminds you why you’re still moving.

Growth has a cost.
And I don’t think acknowledging that makes transformation any less beautiful.
I think it makes it more honest.

Because sometimes becoming requires us to grieve.
Sometimes expanding requires us to release.
And sometimes the hardest part of becoming who you’re becoming…
is saying goodbye to parts of a life you genuinely loved.

A Question for Reflection
What has growth asked you to grieve or release, even when what you were leaving wasn’t bad?
