I’ve been through enough periods of growth in my life now that I’ve started to recognize when one is happening.
Some people might call it an awakening.
Transformation.
Expansion.
A new chapter.
I think I just want to call it growth.
Because we all grow.
Whether you’re spiritual or not, whether you believe in divine timing and soul contracts or absolutely none of that, there are periods in our lives when something within us begins to change.
And I’ve learned that, for me anyway, it usually starts quietly.
Things just start to feel… different.
Something I used to enjoy doesn’t hold my attention the same way.
A food I’ve always loved suddenly doesn’t appeal to me.
A place that once felt completely comfortable starts to feel a little different.
The way I want to spend my time changes.
My priorities shift.
What interests me changes.
The things I want to learn about or talk about change.
What I want professionally changes.
What I need financially changes.
The way I want to care for myself changes.
Sometimes even the way I imagine my future begins to change.
And for a while, I usually don’t recognize any of this as growth.
I just think something is fucking weird. 😂
So I start looking around.
What changed?
What happened?
Why doesn’t this feel the way it used to?
Is something wrong?
And sometimes there is an obvious answer.
But sometimes…
Nothing happened.
Nobody did anything.
There wasn’t some dramatic event that changed everything.
The food didn’t change its recipe.
The place didn’t suddenly become different.
The things I enjoyed didn’t become bad.
My life didn’t necessarily stop being good.
Nothing changed except me.
And you’d think that after experiencing this enough times, I’d recognize what’s happening and gracefully surrender to the process.
Absolutely fucking not. 😂
I resist.
I analyze.
I question everything.
I try to figure out what changed so I can fix it and get everything feeling comfortable again.
Because here’s the thing about growth…
Sometimes you don’t actually want it.
Sometimes you like your life.
Sometimes you’re comfortable.
Sometimes you’ve worked really fucking hard to get comfortable.
And then something inside you starts shifting anyway.
I didn’t ask for this particular period of growth.
I wasn’t sitting around thinking, You know what would be great? Another massive period of personal transformation.
No thank you.
I was actually enjoying myself.
But apparently growth doesn’t require our permission.
It starts nibbling at us.
A little discomfort here.
A little restlessness there.
Something that used to fit doesn’t quite fit the same way.
An idea keeps coming back.
A feeling won’t completely go away.
There’s this quiet sense that something is changing even when you can’t explain what it is.
And if you’re anything like me, you can ignore those little nudges for an impressively long time. 😂
I have this running joke that somewhere in my soul contract with God there’s a clause that says:
If Pam knows it’s time to grow and decides to fuck around and avoid it, just keep making her increasingly uncomfortable until she finally surrenders.
Apparently God takes contractual obligations very seriously.
Because that’s usually what happens.
The whisper gets louder.
The discomfort increases.
The things I’ve been trying not to look at become harder to ignore.
Until eventually, resisting the change becomes more uncomfortable than allowing it.
And that’s usually when I finally surrender.
Not because I suddenly understand what’s happening.
Not because I know exactly where I’m going.
And definitely not because I’ve developed some beautifully organized five year plan.
I surrender because I finally recognize what I’ve experienced enough times before:
I’m changing.
And once I recognize that, I can stop desperately searching my external world for something to blame or fix.
Maybe nothing needs fixing.
Maybe something doesn’t have to become bad before it can feel different.
Maybe I don’t need to immediately understand what this change means.
Maybe I can simply notice it.
Get curious about it.
Allow myself to ask different questions.
What feels different?
What am I drawn toward?
What doesn’t feel like me anymore?
What feels more like me?
What am I discovering about myself now?
Because perhaps one of the strangest parts of growth is that we don’t always recognize ourselves changing while it’s happening.
We notice it through our relationship with everything around us.
The things we want.
The things we don’t.
The things that excite us.
The things that suddenly exhaust us.
The things we can’t stop thinking about.
The things we’ve stopped thinking about entirely.
And slowly, those little changes begin telling us something.
I’m not exactly the person I was when I chose all of this.
That doesn’t tell me what happens next.
I’m still figuring that part out.
But maybe I don’t need to know yet.
Maybe recognizing the change is enough for now.
Because sometimes there isn’t a dramatic ending.
There isn’t a villain.
There isn’t a single moment you can point to and say, That’s when everything changed.
Sometimes you look around at a life that appears almost exactly the same…
and realize it feels different.
Not because everything around you changed.
Because you did.
A Question for Reflection
Have you ever had something in your life begin to feel different even though nothing obvious had changed? What might you notice if, instead of immediately asking “What’s wrong?”, you asked yourself, “What’s changing within me?”
