There is a version of surrender that sounds beautiful.

I surrendered. I let go. I trusted the process.

As though surrender is one peaceful decision we make, followed by immediate freedom.

That hasn’t been my experience.

Surrender can be messy.

Sometimes it looks like denial before acceptance. Anger before understanding. Grief for what was. Fear of what comes next.

Sometimes surrender means watching something you were certain you needed begin to fall away.

Sometimes it means sitting in the darkness long enough to realize that you cannot bring everything with you into whatever comes next.

And sometimes it feels a whole lot more like dissolving than becoming.

That’s the part I don’t think we talk about enough.

The caterpillar doesn’t simply decide to become a butterfly.

There is an entire process in between.

A breaking down.

A releasing of one form before another can fully emerge.

And I think there are seasons in our lives that ask the same of us.

We release beliefs.

Identities.

Expectations.

Relationships with ourselves.

Ways of surviving that once protected us but no longer fit the life we’re trying to build.

And surrender isn’t something we choose once.

At least, it hasn’t been for me.

I’ve had to surrender again and again.

When I became uncomfortable.

When I wanted answers before they were available.

When something wasn’t happening according to my timeline.

When I could feel myself reaching backward toward something familiar simply because the unknown felt too uncertain.

Again and again, the invitation has been:

Let go.
Trust.
Allow.

And then do it again tomorrow if you need to.

But there is another side to surrender.

And this is the part I don’t ever want to leave out.

Because eventually, something begins to emerge from everything that was released.

There is space where there wasn’t space before.

There are possibilities you couldn’t see while you were holding so tightly to what you thought life was supposed to look like.

There is growth.

There is freedom.

There is discovery.

There is a version of yourself you couldn’t have met without first allowing an older version to soften, change, and sometimes completely fall apart.

And then one day, you look around and realize:

Oh. This is what all of that was making room for.

Not because everything suddenly becomes perfect.

But because you’ve changed.

Your world has expanded.

Your wings have grown.

And you finally get to explore places the caterpillar could never have imagined.

That is why I have learned to trust surrender.

Not because surrender is easy.

Not because I enjoy the dissolving.

But because I’ve lived long enough to see what can grow from it.

And every time life asks me to surrender again, I try to remember:

I don’t have to know exactly what is waiting on the other side to trust that something new is being created.

A reflection for you

Is there something you’re being asked to surrender right now?

And instead of asking only,

“What am I losing?”

maybe there is another question worth sitting with:

“What might this be making room for?”
